Mayor, a Commendation, and a Surprise Speech – Just Another Day with Imposter Syndrome
Mayor, a Commendation, and a Surprise Speech – Just Another Day with Imposter Syndrome
May 8th: a day that started like any other, but ended with me in full-on “wait, is this real?” mode. A few months back, I received one of those emails you don’t just skim through—it had mayoralty in the subject line, which either meant I was about to get knighted or spammed by a very confident prince. Thankfully, it was the real deal.
Turns out, I was being awarded the Lord Mayor of Exeter’s Commendation. For my events. And fundraising. Yes, me. Cue imposter syndrome in 3… 2… 1.
Let’s be clear, I don’t frequent the Guildhall. Despite what it sounds like, I don’t casually wander its corridors in a robe of velvet wisdom. But stepping in there for the ceremony felt like I was suddenly part of something much bigger. And a bit fancier.
There we were a small group, all receiving commendations. Some nominated by the public, some directly by the Mayor. Mine was the latter, thanks to Councillor Kevin Mitchell. An all-around amazing human, Kevin showed up at my 12-hour world record attempt (yes, that happened) and cheered me on like I was running for gold. His support has been incredible.
Now, here's where it gets fun. The first person called up didn't say much, which was great, I thought we were doing the quiet-and-humble routine. But then the next person gave a speech. And so did the next. Suddenly it was a full-on TED Talk lineup, and guess who was next?
I gave a short one (promise), but I had to thank my wife. She’s the unsung hero behind every one of my events, gently nudging me when brain fog kicks in (which it does... often). This time, I didn't forget. And I'm so glad I didn’t. She deserved that moment of public appreciation, and so much more.
The room was filled with kindness. Honestly, the stories of the other recipients blew me away. People who give their time, energy, and hearts for the good of others, humbling and inspiring in equal measure.
All in all, it was one of those days. The kind you store in the mental scrapbook and revisit whenever life feels a bit too ordinary.
Another imposter syndrome moment? Absolutely. But a truly wonderful one.
