Day 15: Dumbarton to Larkhall

Day 13 or is it Day 15? Of this epic challenge has officially turned into a marathon-sized adventure, and let me tell you, it wasn’t your average Sunday stroll.

Today’s battlefield was Glasgow, a city that apparently moonlights as a hill-climbing gym. Who knew? I rolled (and wheeled) through some seriously tough terrain, tackling cycle paths that felt more like mountain bike trails. My trusty wheelchair was put to the ultimate test! Grit, determination, and a little bit of “please don’t get stuck now” prayers included.

Pro tip: Always bring your support crew (the supportive ones!) Shoutout to my amazing wife, Cat, who stuck with me on two wheels through thick and thin. Honestly, her company made the gruelling climbs a bit easier to bear, even when the traffic tried its best to turn our ride into a stop-and-go nightmare. Patience is a virtue, especially when you’re trying not to irritate the locals.

After conquering the hills, the road, and the chaos, I checked into the Popping J Hotel, a gem in Glasgow’s heart. Big thanks to the kind folks who donated two nights of warm hospitality and a bounty of pizza bases (because, priorities). They even put up a sign out front for me, which was both overwhelming and incredibly touching.

Much needed as today was one of the dreaded ones! My rock, my human shield (as I was about to discover!) was going home. Her shift was done! I couldn't imagine the event without her! But on the plus side, a legend was yet to come. The awesome Paul. A face of calmness and humour. The perfect 2nd driver!

I had my 1st sight of the handover gremlin, which greeted the poor chap! No welcomes or easing in. More angry head mistress! Not the kind of greeting he was expecting, or Cat & I had negotiated! He took it like a rock and let the angry tone bounce off him, got in the car, and drove like a champion!

So, what’s next? Well, tomorrow is another day, and this marathon continues. If you’re ever in Glasgow, do yourself a favour and stay at the Popping J. Trust me, after a day like today, a comfy bed and good pizza are exactly what the rolling doctor ordered.
